Akiyama to Challenge for Tengen Title

  In the playoff match to decide the challenger of the 39th Tengen title to Iyama yuta, held at the Nihon Ki-in on 9 September 2013, Akiyama Jiro 9-dan pro (B) beat Yamashita Keigo (Meijin) by resignation after 201 moves. Akiyama made his first challenge for a title match of seven major titles. Yamashita could not retain his challenge to Tengen title match for the first time in three years.
  The first game of the 39th Tengen title match (best of five games) will be held on 21 October 2013 in Shiga.

Cho U to Challenge for Oza Title

  The playoff match to decide the challenger for the 61th Oza title was held between Yuki Satoshi (Judan) and Cho U 9-dan pro on 12 September 2013 at The Kansai Kiin. Cho U (B) defeated Yuki by 2.5 points after 228 moves. Cho has made return match to Iyama for Oza title match. The first game of Oza title (best of five games) will be held on 24 October 2013 in Osaka. Yuki could not make his first challenge for Oza title.

Mukai to Challenge for Women's Honinbo Title

  Mukai Chiaki 5-dan pro becomes the challenger to Hsieh Yi Min for Women's Honinbo title. In the play-off to decide the challenger for the 32th Women's Honinbo title, held at The Nihon Ki-in on 29 August 2013, Mukai (W) defeats Chinen Kaori 4-dan pro by resignation. Mukai makes her first challenge for Women's title match in two years.
  Chinen could not win her challenge for the first time in 8 years.
  The first game of the 32nd Women's Honinbo title match (five-match series) will be held in on 2 October 2013 in Iwate.

The 34th World Amateur Go Championship in Sendai

  The 34th World Amateur Go Championship was held from 1 till 4 September 2013 in Sendai that was one of the disaster areas of the Great East Japan earthquake in 2011. The winner was Hyunjae Choi from Korea. Of special note was European players' great performance. Artem Kachanovskyi from Ukraine became the third place which was made by an European player for the first time in twenty years. Ilya Shikshin from Russia finished the fourth place and Pavol Lisy from Slovakia got the fifth place.
